With a variety of options available, knowledge is important when facing the treatment of prostate cancer, one of the most prevalent cancers among men.

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 186,320 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in the United States and nearly 30,000 men will die from the disease this year.

The good news is that the disease can be detected early through routine yearly exams and successfully treated. The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test and the digital rectal examination (DRE) should be offered annually, beginning at age 50, to men who have a life expectancy of at least 10 years.

With sickness and injury being as common as the sun’s rise and fall, it is imperative that we look at the future with an eye on our health and the health of those we love. Home health care providers should understand the needs of their clients and work to serve them.

It starts with patients, who are not just numbers on a page or faces in the crowd; they are individual people with individual circumstances who need the proper care and instruction of physicians. Whether a patient has a serious illness or is recovering from injury, he or she will depend on the physician to answer an expansive array of questions and provide knowledgeable information that can be trusted.

There is a multitude of patients who will reach the point that they can no longer stay in the hospital. At this point, it is often ideal and most fitting for the patient to transition into home healthcare. Home healthcare, simply put, is healthcare delivered in a patient's home. Home healthcare services can range from in-home nursing care or rehabilitation following a hospital stay, to ongoing assistance with daily living activities such as shopping, meal preparation or bathing.
